2009 Masters Championship Tournament

The tournament was once again held at Golden Pin Lanes in Tucson. We unveiled a new traveling championship plaque on Saturday. Entry fees have remained the same with qualifying on Saturday and the Finals on Sunday.

We had 45 entries this year, which was quite a decrease from previous years. After the qualifying round on Saturday we cut the field to 10 finalists. Those 10 finalists returned on Sunday morning and bowled a round robin format finals of 10 games. Ed Smaglik, from Flagstaff, was the winner of the tournament and took home a check for $700.00 and a paid entry into the USBC Masters Tournament. Congratulations to Ed for his accomplishment. Below are the final results from the tournament.

2009 Masters Entry

There seems to be a lot of discussion this year about the financial part of the tournament and I would like to try to clear up some of the concerns. The main issue is the Expense fee. In accordance with USBC if you list money in the Prize Fund portion of the entry fees, all of that money has to be returned in prizes. We listed the bowling fee as $14.50 and the Expense fee as $23.50. The expense fee is the area that gives us some latitude and discretion in the use of the funds. The lineage for the tournament was actually $8.50 for 3 games. For the bowling on Saturday that meant that the bowling fee of $14.50 was $2.50 short and we still had 100 games on Sunday for the finals. That money comes out of the expense fees, as we do not know how many entries, and therefore how much money will be required for lineage, until 30 minutes prior to the start of the tournament. Out of the expense fees we also pay the winners entry into the USBC Masters. This money can't be listed under the prize fees due to the fact that if the winner does not go, the money does not get paid. We also pay the advertising in the desert bowler and if we are lucky enough to have any left over, we compensate the tournament workers for their time.

We are also constantly looking for suggestions on ways to improve the tournament and increase participation. If you have ideas please share them with us. It is your tournament! You can complain all you want on the ACBA Bulletin Board but they can't change this tournament!

For those that have bowled this tournament for several years, think back a few years to the days when we did a double elimination style format with 3 game sets. We changed the format due to the bowlers requests. We also moved the tournament to the September time frame due to bowler input at the tournaments.
